The General Federated Women’s Clubs of Morristown, made up of Soma Sala Circle, Ladies Reading Circle, and Junior Reading Circle, conducted a Youth Poetry Contest in Hamblen County Schools.
Judge for the contest were Pam Mullins and Christine Mosley of the Hamblen County Library.
Fourteen schools participated, sending in a total of 55 entries. Local winning poems in each category were sent on to compete at the District, State and National Levels.
The clubs presented certificates and monetary prizes to the local first, second and third place winners in each of the categories: grades 1-3; grades 4-6; grades 7-9; and grades 10-12.
Winners were as follows:
Category I
- First place, Evan, second grade, Donna Rasch’s class at Lincoln Elementary
- Second place, Amber, third grade, Chasa Alder’s class at Union Heights
- Third place, Vesely, second grade, Suzanne Harrison’s class at Russellville Elementary
Category II
- First place, Carson, fourth grade, Candance McClellan’s class at Alpha Elementary
- Second place, Shelby, fifth grade, Robyn Brooks’ class at Lincoln Elementary
- Third place, Sarah, fourth grade, Candance McClellan’s class at Alpha Elementary
Category III
- First place, Abigail, seventh grade, Dawn Wilson’s class at East Ridge
- Second place, Abigail, seventh grade, Amy Foster’s class at West View
- Third place, Amanda, seventh grade, Leighann Westmoreland’s class at East Rdige
Category IV (all from Kay Senter’s senior class at East High)
