AL Students Learn About Alaska
Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Valerie Stone, a former resident of Alaska visited Candance McClellan’s classroom at Alpha Elementary to share her knowledge of the state

The students had finished reading Akiak, a story about an Iditarod race, that takes place in Alaska. Students were very interested in life in Alaska so Mrs. Stone brought in information that she had gathered when she had lived there.

“She had an excellent slideshow that the students were able to view on the Smartboard from her last visit back home to Alaska,” McClellan said. “Students were able to see glaciers and icebergs in the pictures, which correlated with the Ice Age lesson that they had studied about in Social Studies.

“They were able to try on the parka that she wore while in Alaska,” the teacher said. “Students were amazed by how the coat was made and what it felt like to wear it. They also learned a lot about salmon by viewing the pictures of salmon being caught by the Stone family. Students were informed how the salmon was prepared to be eaten after it was caught.”
