Alpha Primary Literacy Day Activities
Fall 2009
Monday
On Monday, each class will be completing a writing activity based on a class read-aloud. This may be a journal activity, class book, poem, or reader response activity. The activity will correlate with the "6-Trait + 1" writing strategies.
Tuesday
On Tuesday, we will invite parents to be guest readers in our classroom.
Wednesday
Wednesday will be a day of creative expression. Students will participate in reader's theater, choral readings, puppet shows, etc. to present books.
Thursday
Each child will bring his or her favorite book to school on Thursday. Students may do a presentation on the book, read it aloud to the class, or share it in a small group.
Friday
Friday will be a day to celebrate literacy through special activities based on a class read-aloud. Students will participate in activities that will extend the print to life. Some teachers may choose to do several small activities throughout the day, while others may opt to do one large activity.
Alpha Intermediate School
Monday: Captain Compass
Students will draw a map from school to their house, being as detailed as possible. They will then write the directions that will go with their maps. As a class, students will be introduced to map quest and then given a chance in computer lab to practice using this program.
Tuesday: Cloud Characters
Each class will spend 5 to 10 minutes observing cloud formations. The students will create a character, setting, and a plot for a story by looking at a cloud or group of clouds. The students will then write these stories and then share them with the class.
*Parents from the class, or family members of the teacher will read a short story to the class.
Wednesday: From Text to Print
Students will create a text message using "text language" and then give it to a friend to correct. The teacher could also project a text message on the overhead or smart-board for the entire class to correct.
*Central Office or School Board Members will be reading in various classes.
Thursday: Create-a-Comic
Students will create a comic strip that goes along with the reading story. They will practice sequencing by identifying the main events in a comic strip.
*Students will read with a friend or buddy read with another class.
Friday: Literacy Day - The Curtain Call
Students will be placed in small groups and asked to write a play. They will be given 25-30 minutes to come up with a short play. After the parts are written they will present their plays to the class.
